  • General Information:

The Consular Section is a part of the British Embassy in Tbilisi. Mr. Doug McMillan, Her Majesty's Consul and his staff are here to look after the interests of British citizens visiting or living in Georgia.

As a general principle, we aim to attend to all visitors within 15 minutes of their arrival or offer an appointment for a later time. British nationals in need of emergency assistance outside office hours, or those wishing to contact us about a British national involved in an emergency, should call our Global Response Centre in London. Examples of emergencies include the hospitalisation, detention or death of a British national overseas. Our Global Response team provides, emergency assistance only and cannot answer routine passport questions and visa enquiries. The telephone number is +995 32 227 47 47 . Your call will be charged at local call rates and may be recorded for monitoring and training purposes.

Visitors requiring consular assistance should not join the visa queue but should make themselves known to the Embassy guard at the entrance to visa/consular section.

What the consul can and cannot do for you

This page gives advice what help we can provide if you do get into difficulty. We offer help which is appropriate to the individual circumstances of each case, including:

  • issuing replacement passports;
  • providing information about transferring funds;
  • providing appropriate help if you have suffered rape or serious assault, are a victim of other crime, or are in hospital;
  • helping people with mental illness;
  • providing details of local lawyers, interpreters and doctors and funeral directors;
  • doing all we properly can to contact you within 24 hours of being told that you have been detained;
  • offering support and help in a range of other cases, such as child abductions, death of relatives overseas, missing people and kidnapping;
    contacting family or friends for you if you want; and
  • making special arrangements in cases of terrorism, civil disturbances or natural disasters

UK law says we have to charge for some services. Consulates display the current fees and the standards of service you can expect.

BUT we cannot...

  • get you out of prison, prevent the local authorities from deporting you after your prison sentence, or interfere in criminal or civil court proceedings;
  • help you enter a country, for example, if you do not have a visa or your passport is not valid, as we cannot interfere in another country’s immigration policy or procedures;
  • give you legal advice, investigate crimes or carry out searches for missing people, although we can give you details of people who may be able to help you in these cases, such as English-speaking lawyers;
  • get you better treatment in hospital or prison than is given to local people;
  • pay any bills or give you money (in very exceptional circumstances we may lend you some money from public funds, which you will have to pay back);
  • make travel arrangements for you, or find you work or accommodation; or
  • make business arrangements on your behalf.
Online Consular Registration

Foreign and Commonwealth Office have set up a new improved online registration service called LOCATE for British nationals travelling or living abroad to register themselves with the FCO.

In order to use LOCATE, you will need to register separately. But you will only need to register once. British nationals who are either resident in or visiting any country abroad, whether for business or pleasure, should register their details online. The registration details will remain on LOCATE. Details of your visits or residence abroad will not remain after their expiry date. LOCATE will accept details of travel abroad up to one year ahead. Please, note that an existing subscription to the FCO's Online Services will not allow access to LOCATE.

We are confident that this new service will improve our ability to provide help in crisis situations and reduce delay and worry in times of stress for family and friends at home.

To complete the LOCATE online consular registration form, please go to: LOCATE - online consular registration.
